Maundy Thursday is a day to remember the disciples gathering around Jesus before his death. We often remember the story as that of the Last Supper, and a story that ushers in betrayal. But underneath, it is also a story about love and grace and how we relate to those who want us harmed. Jesus washes the disciples’ feet. Every disciple. Jesus also predicts his death and the betrayal of Judas. Yet he washes Judas’ feet. Jesus knew what Judas would do, but still, he breaks bread with him. Jesus extends love and the possibility of change and redemption all the way to the end. He never treats Judas as ‘the enemy’, as worthless, as someone whose dignity and humanity can just be erased or disregarded. Even in betrayal and pain, Jesus attends to the humanity of the one who hurts him. My prayer for the world today is that this same attention to one another’s dignity and humanity would be at the core of our actions as people and as nations. “Now before the festival of the Passover, Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart from this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.” — John 13.1
