Oasis Ministry: Hospitality and Commitment to Service

One of the best parts of our time spent in Belize was our stay at Oasis Ministry. We were well-fed and well-cared for. We felt safe and inspired by the service to the Lord that Oasis does in the community. Oasis Ministry has a multifaceted, thriving ministry with several programs for children and youth running each week: preschool program, youth scholarship and guidance program, and children’s Salt and Light and Saturday program. At times, Ron and Linda have opened their […]

Home Again

We arrived home safely in Fredericton. It is good to be back. We had only minor hiccups on our 24-hour return trip. Our heads are full of images of Belize and of children’s faces. The snow seems a bit strange. The best way to sum things up would be in Karen’s words before we left, “I want to go, but I don’t want to leave.” Note: Stay tuned for a final podcast in a few weeks and possibly other posts […]

Building Relationships Within

Today as we discussed the relationships that we’ve made with the children and teachers of St. Hilda’s, we also reflected on the depth of the relationships we have built between team members and as a team overall. We feel touched and blessed with these richer relationships with Christ Church Cathedral and look forward to continuing to be involved with St. Hilda’s. On a practical note, we are in Belize City today, and flying out to Houston tomorrow night.     […]

A Day of Good Byes

Today was a very busy, but interesting day. There was a cultural day at St. Hilda’s, which celebrated East-Indian and Mayan cultures, and we organized fun reading and math activities for the kids. Also, we said our good byes to the students and teachers, shedding a few tears. Below are photos of children dressed up in clothing from a variety of cultures, a photo of the mission team with the excellent teachers and principal at St. Hilda’s Anglican School, a […]

Music fun!

Today, there was music with the kids and more music with the kids! Rebecca and I, the music team, traveled around to the different younger classrooms and sang action songs with the kids.  Once the kids got going, there was nothing stopping them! A fallout from teaching the kids these songs was that they were in high demand at recess! Stay tuned for “music videos” hopefully up and running by tomorrow evening.

Life Lessons, Pythagorean Theorem, and Song for Rebecca

Each day, we are busy doing a variety of teaching activities with the children, supporting the excellent teachers. Today included: checking students’ answers to a Pythagorean theorem word problem, playing “Simon Says”,  watching our team (St Hilda’s) boys and girls from standard five (grade seven) play in a volleyball tournament, playing active games with a parachute, playing Frogger (an elimination game where the leader tries to guess who is the frog), letter writing to Fredericton children, encouraging the teachers, taking […]

Frogger, Bananagrams, and Reading Help

Today has been filled with a variety of activities at the school. We have worked in the classrooms with students, observed classes, and worked with small groups outside on the picnic tables. Nat and Rebecca began their music ministry and games today. The younger children loved everything that Nat and Rebecca did. There was a lot of happy noise and excitement. Today, we started using the games, and they were a smashing success! Of all the excited reactions, my favorite […]

Same Service, Different Continent

Today, we went to the church service at St. Hilda’s Anglican Church. It was a bit surreal to go from looking at pictures of this beautiful little church to actually stepping inside it. The service was beautiful. Father David Alenskis was sincere and enthusiastic in his ministry, and his wife Mary Ann had a lovely touch on the organ. We were blessed to meet some teachers and the principal of St. Hilda’s Anglican School, Ms. Jane. After the service, we […]

Arrived Safe and Sound

Yesterday, we were blessed with a safe and fairly easy trip down to Unionville, Belize where we are staying at the Oasis Mission Centre. Oasis is taking very good care of us. We have been impressed with the 100 homes that they have built for deserving families.
