Frogger, Bananagrams, and Reading Help

Jim playing math games with dice.

Today has been filled with a variety of activities at the school. We have worked in the classrooms with students, observed classes, and worked with small groups outside on the picnic tables.

Nat and Rebecca began their music ministry and games today. The younger children loved everything that Nat and Rebecca did. There was a lot of happy noise and excitement.

Today, we started using the games, and they were a smashing success! Of all the excited reactions, my favorite was the childrens’ reactions to using dice for addition and multiplication. It was a competitive game to see who could add or multiply the value of the dice the fastest.  I don’t think I have ever seen children so excited.

  1. Looks great! I’ve been enjoying listening to the first podcast too, and hear how important the folks at St. Hilda’s find that the relationship is. The feel of the joy in the classrooms too, contrasted with the poverty you’re seeing.

  2. It’s wonderful to hear about what’s happening at the school! We look forward to each update!

Please also share the team’s prayer requests, and any challenges you’ve encountered. You all carry the strength and love of many people with you! 🙂 <3

  3. Hi Kirsten,

Thanks for the comments and for keeping us alive on the Cathedral Facebook page. There are some significant challenges to editing and data entry using mobile devices exclusively. Little on the web works quite the same on a phone or tablet.

As for prayer, I think our greatest challenges are around working with some students who are behind the majority. Some we (and their teachers) are deeply aware may never catch up. Jim and I, and Kelley and Rebecca, have been tasked to work with the older levels in late afternoon … and that is a challenge. It is however great to see overall what the teachers are able to do with little to work with. It’s not at all difficult to see where what ever has and is being offered is put to very good use. That’s important for us all at the Cathedral to know. I think we all feel very much aware of the prayers at home.

While we’re not building materially, the educational challenge has been set firmly before us on this visit. I think at the least we’re being somewhat successful in providing some support to the teachers and perhaps a morale booster shot for them.

  4. Just listened to the current podcasts from our Mission Team serving at St. Hilda’s, Belize. What a compelling witness! It’s about the essence of Christ’s Gospel. It to speaks the servant-hearts of our missioners. And it affirms the significance of this “pilgrimage” for the ongoing mission-focus at Christ Church Cathedral.
